Charms class encourages Hogwarts students to study all sorts of useful spells. For instance, this is the class where Harry and his classmates learn to levitate objects (Wingardium Leviosa!) which comes in handy for him later! This class covers many random and amusing pieces of magic, where students can learn to really hone their skills. One day you could be learning how to light up your wand (Lumos!) the next, you could be learning how to make a pineapple dance across a desk.
